Direct Mail Marketing is “not dead” can be heard over and over by many marketing gurus, I too am on that bandwagon. Many marketers are pumping their marketing dollars into online tactical advertising mediums like Facebook pay per click, sponsored ads in Twitter, Instagram and Linkedin. While those that are really crushing it are using all of those plus Direct Mail to dominate their market place and increase sales. Direct Mail is not cheap by any means, but so few are using it these days, a clever campaign can stand out and grab the attention of a any target market.
Here are 5 Direct Mail Marketing Tips to help you dominate your marketplace with a well-planned out Direct Mail Marketing Campaign.
1. Know and Understand Your Target Audience
This is were many marketers fail at Direct Mail or any advertising for that matter. You must take the time and do the research to know and understand your target market. It starts with the basic demographics, male or female, age and income, buying habits, kids, pets, home owner, car owner, hobbies and hangouts. Then you move into what makes them squirm, trigger points called Hot Buttons that get their attention and push on a pain or problem. Target your mailer with a headline that addresses those pains and problems and your campaign is a winner.
2. Test, Test Please Test
After getting to know and understand your audience and figuring out what problems or pains you can solve for them you must do segmented tests to ensure you have it right. Before deploying a full blow Direct Mail campaign test two or three different headlines to 500 or 1,000 addresses on your list and wait for the response. Move forward with the one that gets the most response.
3. Brand Image Is Huge
Don’t go cheap and don’t design your mailers yourself, let a profession develop a strong graphic design and powerful headline that grabs and keeps your target audiences attention and makes them act on the call to action you are promoting. Full color, thick stock is a must for postcards, an envelope or package with a unique shape is another more expensive option, whichever you choose do not go cheap.
4. The Fortune Is In The Follow Up
If you want to maximize the results of your Direct Mail Campaign, try a follow up call a few days after the mailing hits, I guarantee nobody is doing this and you will blow the top off of your results. Become that over the top personal touch company and leave your competition in the dust.
5. Be The Best
We live in a digital age, there is no question that marketing has changed and will continue to change and evolve as the tools and resources to marketing our businesses charge. What should never change is your quest to be the best in your marketplace – and if you are the best you must let your target audience know and it takes marketing lots and lots of marketing with a strategic message and plan to become the #1 company in your industry.
