Florida Sinkholes have been all the talk lately due to the unfortunate tragedy that claimed a man’s life when a sinkhole opened up under his bed room. While most people are now worried that their homes may not be safe, one Florida business owner caught my attention with his rant on the possibility of losing his business “if” a sinkhole opened up under it.
I jumped online to check his business out and found a very lame website. In digging deeper I was not able to find any Social Media presence what so ever. No Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin or YouTube digital footprint at all. I scratched my head thinking this guy is so worried about a sinkhole destroying his business, yet he is not using Social Media to connect with clients and prospects to maintain and grow is business.
So I started thinking sure a Sinkhole can destroy a business but not using Social Media in this day and age will surely destroy a business. With Social Media Marketing being one of my Top 5 Marketing Trends for 2013 I put together what a sinkhole has in common with Social Media below.
What is it?
Social media: Social media encompasses any technology that allows you to publish commentary online for a virtual community. Social media outlets include blogs, wikis, and networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube.
Sinkhole: A sinkhole is a hole or opening in the earth’s surface and are typically formed due to erosion of bedrock in an area due to water flowing or moving beneath the ground’s surface.
Can it be used to build backlinks to my website?
Social Media: Yes, the best way to create backlinks using Social Media is to develop excellent content that creates a lot of buzz. This will encourage users to share your content across their Social Networks. Social media sites are an excellent platform for added exposure that will lead to more links to your website.
Sinkhole: No, well maybe – if your business is destroyed by a sinkhole the attention your business will get will be priceless. Every news outlet will post about it and countless people will post and share the story to all of their Social Media Networks building a mass of backlinks to your website.
Can I make money with it?
Social Media: Social Media platforms are not really intended to be a money making opportunity for users. They were developed to provide users a way to connect with each other and to share content that they think others will like. You can add to your bottom line by offering up valuable content that offers solutions to users problems. This will most often lead to them seeking you out for further assistance that they are willing to pay for.
Sinkhole: Once your business is destroyed by a sinkhole you will more than likely be offered a book deal which will lead to a major motion picture with the lead role (you) being played by the likes of Tom Cruise or Denzel Washington. Then opportunities for your own Sinkhole Cologne will blossom, the fame and fortune will be endless.
So my point here is don’t worry about the what if’s, worry about what you have control of. Social Media is defiantly something you have control of and without question your business needs to be using it each and every day, if you don’t use it worrying about a Sinkhole destroying your business will not even be in the equation.
